The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ is now just 23 days away.
As we count down to the start of the global showpiece in Qatar on 20 November, FIFA+ is showcasing 100 of the greatest moments in FIFA World Cup history.
Hakan Sukur was Turkey’s star striker when they made it all the way to the semi-finals of the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan™. But despite starting each of his side’s first six matches, he arrived at their seventh without having found the net.
Turkey had narrowly lost out to eventual winners Brazil in the semi-finals but had one last hurrah in the tournament of their lives when they played co-hosts Korea Republic in the third-place play-off. And that, of course, was when Sukur finally struck, writing his name into the history books by scoring the World Cup’s fastest-ever goal.
Korea Republic had kicked off, calmly passing the ball back to the defence, but Sukur and fellow striker Ilhan Mansiz chased them down and forced an error. In a flash, Turkey’s No9 had the ball on the edge of the area and the goal in his sights. Sukur teed himself up with his right foot and then pulled the trigger with his left, sending the ball low and hard into the net.
